One of the many positive aspects of the new Brazilian federal public TV – an aspect that by itself justifies the decree that instituted it – is the debate that is now taking place concerning the relationship between the TV system adopted in the country and the society that it serves.
A number of social groups, organized groups in particular, debate the deficiencies of commercial television and the limitations of today’s public TV, with the goal of presenting proposals to remedy these limitations and of defining their specific demands.
The first issue that arises in the debate of diversity and television is a conceptual one. Which kind of diversity are we talking about? Is our definition restricted to the notions of gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation? Or is it a broader definition, which relates to the multiplicity of the human experience in every one of its dimensions and in every part of the globe; in essence, cultural diversity.
Militant groups, understandably, prioritize the more restricted sense, focused as they are in their immediate goals. It is useful however, to approach the issue from a broader perspective, taking into account that the adoption of cultural diversity will add great value to Brazilian television and that representations of gender and ethnicity, among others, will be contemplated once the notion of diversity is finally accepted by the networks. Brazilian television, without a doubt, is light-years away from true diversity, and commercial networks preach the opposite – uniformity- almost as a rule.
