The Secretary of Culture of Bahia, Márcio Meirelles, said the goal of his administration has been to promote cultural diversity in all regions of Bahia, a state that, due to its size, has a large variety of cultural manifestations. He stressed further that the work of the State Government in this area has been recognized at the national and international levels. Geraldo Maraes gave the opening speech, stressing the importance of the event, especially in light of the implementation of the UNESCO Convention for Cultural Diversity.
Moraes also highlighted the great impact that the evolution of digital medias has had on the field of communications, to the benefit of cultural diversity. Another point highlighted by Moraes was the growing number of countries and regions that have implemented policies to preserve their cultures and give back control to civil society of their own cultural resources. "It was thanks to the support we got from civil society that we achieved many victories, such as the adoption of the UNESCO Convention, which was approved almost unanimously," he added.
Later today, the IFCCD (International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity) General Assembly will take place; during the assembly a new Board of Directors will be elected.
