Perspectives of diversity and cultural integration in Bahia
Even though the Minister of Culture, Juca Ferreira, was not able to attend the event this morning, we still had a great time promoting culture diversity and understanding between the peoples. Heading the morning sessions was the Secretary of Culture of Bahia, Márcio Meirelles, who advocated the need to transform culture into a basic human right. Meirellles believes that the State should facilitate access to the tools needed for cultural production since culture is an integral part of people’s identities and an important engine of economic development. He explained how the decentralization process was carried out in Bahia’s municipalities and highlighted a number of partnerships that were established with Universities through their graduate culture production programs. The Secretary also mentioned some aspects that need improving: “Our main difficulty is the institutionalization of culture”. Meirelles also talked about a number of projects, such as the “Doc-Território” that involves cultural producers from all over the State and the growing number of independent productions that are being supported by government initiatives.
